Support Schemes

Training your workforce is just one way to obtain the skills your business needs, you may instead choose to employ a new member of staff.

There are not usually any funding schemes available to help you employ a new member of staff, these costs should be met by your business, however the Government is currently providing a number of incentives. These are listed below.

Funding for Training
Funding from Government to improve your skills, or the skills of your employees, is not usually paid to you directly but there is a range of training that you and your employees can attend at no cost, other than your time away from the business.

Why is some training free? Government pays Colleges and other Training Providers to run particular types of qualifications and training because they know that this will help businesses to grow. Additional schemes developed locally using EU funds are free for the same reason.

Is it all free? No. Training for skills that are your statutory or legal duty as an employer to provide will not be paid for or subsidised by Government e.g. Manual Handling, Health & Safety, Food Hygiene. Higher level skills are less likely to be paid for by Government too. Some training will be subsidised – the Training Provider will pay half of the cost and you must pay the rest.

For Local information and advice

Contact Skills and Learning Bournemouth Poole and Dorset to understand more about training and qualifications available and the costs, and book online.

Local Colleges and Training Providers have full details of the training that you and your staff can attend. Talk to them to see if they can provide you with the training your business needs.

For information on general business support schemes please see the Starting Up section or the Growing your Business section. Schemes to help you raise business finance can be found in the Finance section.

National Tourism academy

Unlocking tourism potential

We believe in the potential of tourism to fuel economic growth, regenerate communities and create new jobs.

Our mission is simply to stimulate coastal tourism. Everything we do is grounded in the theory that improving visitor satisfaction increases visitor numbers, length of stay, repeat visits and likelihood to recommend, and that a truly collaborative approach at destination level can increase market size, as well as market share.

We’re funded by central Government, in partnership with Bournemouth Borough Council, Bournemouth University and the industry itself. Our purpose is to establish an entire coastal destination as a centre of excellence for tourism and hospitality, so we partner with tourism businesses to help them reach their commercial potential and provide the best possible experiences for their visitors. Think of us as an extension of a business – a research, strategy and training arm, all delivered in a straightforward, concise and engaging way.

Who is it for?

Starting initially in Bournemouth, the NCTA is for anyone who interacts with visitors – restaurants, hotels, holiday parks, self-catering accommodation, language schools, transport providers, retailers, destination managers and residents – anyone who plays a part in the visitor economy. By capturing best practice in a unique database, we will be able to offer other coastal destinations across the UK access to practical support and market intelligence to reinvigorate coastal economies and create new jobs.

HIT Training

HIT was founded by a small group of directors who successfully established and developed ‘Hospitality Plus’, which became the major training provider for the hospitality and leisure industries prior to its sale.

Like their trainers and assessors, everyone has worked in the industry, gaining valuable experience and understanding of what learners and employers need from both perspectives. HIT has supported over 30,000 learners at over 7,000 employer sites across the country.

Their aims are simple: to help employers increase the effectiveness and profitability of their staff, to develop learners’ personal, economic and social status and to enhance the level of service given to their customers and clients. This is reflected in the success of their learners and the quantifiable improvements and benefits for their employers.
