A third of small firms ‘below cybersecurity poverty line’

Research from Duo Security has revealed that 36% of small and medium-sized firms are operating at or below the ‘security poverty line’, meaning they are not spending enough on cybersecurity to protect themselves from an attack. In addition, 38% of smaller firms are not planning to make any investment in cybersecurity in 2017/18, while 30% will spend less than 3% of their total budget on it. Separate research from cybersecurity solutions provider Symantec has indicated that malicious emails are the most common type of cyberattack. Overall, more than 8,000 firms are targeted by email-based cyberattacks every month.
